Changes to Eye Care Coverage under OHIP
Dear patients:
The Ministry of Health in Ontario has made some adjustment to the Schedule of Benefits for Optometry Services. This may impact your visit at our clinic, and below are some changes that may or may not impact you as a patient.
Paediatrics: (patients age 19 and younger):
No changes to the services offered for Major (full) eye exams or Minor (partial) eye exams.
Paediatric patients aged 19 and under will still be covered for a Major (full) eye exam once a year.
Minor (partial) exams are still covered in the year following the Major (full) eye exam.
No limit on Minor exams during the year following the Major eye exam
Seniors: (patients age 65 and old):
Some Seniors will only be covered for a Major (full) eye exam once every 18 months rather than every 12 months. Others with certain eye conditions will remain covered every 12 months for Major (full) eye exams.
Only two (2) Minor (partial/follow up) visits/exams will be paid for by OHIP within a billing cycle. For example, if you are a senior and covered for an eye exam every 18 months, you will be eligible for two (2) Minor (partial/follow up) visits/exams within the 18 months period. Similarly, for patients covered every 12 months, they will be eligible for two (2) Minor (partial/follow up) visits/exams within their 12 months period.
Further Minor (partial/follow up) visits/exams will have to be paid for by the patient which could be covered by their private insurance plan.
Patient age 20-64 with a medical condition:
Multiple medical conditions that were previously covered by OHIP are now not covered and/or covered only if the disease is active.
1. Amblyopia (lazy eye):
not an insured medical condition anymore, and patient will be asked to pay for their visits.
2. Recurrent Uveitis (iritis):
visits will only be covered if the disease is active.
We advise the patient to contact our office for their specific case if they were covered in the past, and if their coverage will continue.
Thank you for your continuous support. We look forward to continue care for your eye health and vision at Pixel.
